Our Story

For the founding team of Hashtag Believer Foundation, that question was not "How can we start an NGO?" but rather "Why do communities facing similar challenges often require different solutions?" Before the Foundation was established, our team travelled across the rural regions of Uttarakhand as documentary filmmakers in 2019. What began as storytelling gradually evolved into a journey of research, observation, and learning. While documenting life in the mountains, we connected with students, farmers, women, teachers, youth, community leaders, and government officials. We discovered that every village had its own strengths, challenges, aspirations, and mindset. Although issues such as migration, unemployment, education, agriculture, and lack of opportunities appeared similar across regions, their root causes were often different. This shaped the philosophy that continues to guide our work today: There is no universal solution for every community. Sustainable development begins by understanding local realities, identifying root causes, and creating solutions together with the people. Our journey also taught us that money alone cannot transform a community. Resources are important, but lasting change happens when people believe in change, participate in the process, and take ownership of solutions. This belief became the foundation of our philosophy: "For the People, By the People." The Beginning Our first initiative was a small learning space called The Brain Gym Study Centre, established in 2022, in the Gram Panchayat Bhawan of Village Talwari, Block Tharali, District Chamoli, Uttarakhand. With the approval of the Gram Panchayat, we received an unused space in the government building along with access to electricity and water at zero infrastructure cost. Although the building had a leaking rooftop during the monsoon, it became a place filled with learning, creativity, and hope. Designed primarily for children from farming and economically modest families, the Centre combined academic education with extracurricular activities, critical thinking, communication skills, leadership, creativity, sports, arts, and social awareness. Powered by Community The Brain Gym Study Centre grew through community participation. High-performing students from nearby Government Degree Colleges volunteered as teachers and mentors without remuneration, while local youth and community members contributed their time and skills. This experience proved that impactful initiatives do not always require large budgets—they require trust, participation, and a shared commitment to serve. From a Study Centre to a People's Organization With the trust of local families, the Centre grew to support more than 100 students. As our work expanded, we established Hashtag Believer Foundation as a registered nonprofit organization in 2023. From a small study centre operating under the roof of a village Panchayat building to a growing nonprofit organization, our journey has never been defined by the size of our resources. It has been defined by the strength of our partnerships and our unwavering belief that when people come together with purpose, knowledge, and compassion, they can build self-reliant communities and create lasting change.
